It has been a long cold winter for many of us here in the Northeast and New England. Many people I know including myself had many ailments these past couple of months- even still, some of my patients have a lingering cold or cough. Finally, we have made it to Spring!! Finally, we get to move and clean and do new fun and wonderful things. Outdoor things. Warmer things!
This also usually means new aches and pains. During the winter months it is just too cold to do many of the outdoor activities we may usually do during the rest of the year. Some of us stay strong and go to the gym, or work out at home. Regardless of which activity you may partake in to get your blood pumping, know that with the new season will come some body pains and changes. Our bodies have been somewhat in hibernation mode for most of the cold weather and introducing more activity- even walking outside more- can cause those muscles that had been sleeping to suddenly wake up and become sore. Don't let this daunt your efforts! The aches and tenderness you feel are completely normal and does not mean you are "just getting older"! :)
Our bodies tend to wake up around spring time, along with the Earth around us. Don't forget to keep drinking water throughout the day to keep you hydrated and to help rid your body of toxins. Now is also a great time to try that detox you always wanted to do! Anything you can do to rid your body of the extra toxins taken in during this winter or "dark" time of the year is a wonderful way to kick start not just your metabolism but your immune system as well!
Our overall health is governed by three- mind, body and spirit. If one is in discord, you can be sure that the other two will soon follow. Keeping this in mind, it is so important to continue your healthy habits throughout the whole year. I'll be honest though, it's pretty tough for me to eat right during the holidays and to get up early to go to the gym before work, or even want to go after work- especially when it is is dark and cold outside!
The best way to shred the cabin fever and get some more spring in your step (see what I did there?) is to start from the inside out! Speak with your doctor or nutritionist to find a safe detox for your body. Find a new workout program, even if it's an at-home dvd! Remember stretching is wonderful and should always be a part of your daily regime, be it in the morning when you wake up or before going to bed- and especially after a workout! Find out what fruits and vegetables are in season during this time (I posted a link on my Facebook page a while back for this) and start adding them into your weekly diet! All of these things can help you sleep better, feel better and become more healthy. Of course, I would suggest adding in massage therapy to the mix!
I have said it so many times before, but I feel it merits repeating: Massage is NOT a luxury, it is a human NEED. We need to be touched. We need massage therapy in order to loosen sore muscles, increase our blood flow and lymphatic flow. This keeps us at the "top of our game"- massage keeps all of our body systems working well and strong and keeps us in good health.
I hope you have had a wonderful winter, BRING ON THE SPRING!!
